Assistant
The team's AI over the whole app. Ask it about your data, have it make changes, and use it from Slack and Discord.
Open it
| Where | How |
|---|---|
| Home page | Type in Ask Median anything and press Enter. The chat opens on its own page |
| Command palette | Ask the assistant or Message the assistant. See Command palette |
| Chat page | Every chat has its own page. Reopen one from the Chats drawer |
| Slack and Discord | Message or mention the Median app or bot. See In Slack and Discord below |
The assistant needs Standard or Pro, and each answer uses credits. On Explore you cannot send, and a line under the box reads Available on Standard and Pro. See Plans.
What it can do
Every call runs with your role. If you are a member and ask it to change the agent, the call is refused the same way the page would refuse you. See Roles.
| Area | Reads | Changes |
|---|---|---|
| Inbox | Conversations and their threads | Reply, add a note, set status, archive, snooze, mark read or unread, hand a thread to or from the agent, delete |
| Customers | The directory, one customer’s history and learned facts | Refresh a profile, reach out, forget a fact, delete a customer |
| Knowledge | Search, documents, folders, the review queue, website imports | Write, edit, move and delete documents. Create, rename, move and delete folders. Approve or dismiss suggestions. Retry a failed document. Start or stop a website import. Sync connected sources |
| Signals | Bugs and suggestions, one report in full | File, edit, set priority and status, merge, delete, open an issue in Linear or GitHub, confirm or dismiss a fix commit |
| Numbers | Home page stats, conversation volume, satisfaction, signal counts, library health, spend and credits, plan, invoices, API allowance, usage history, the activity log, any explorer dataset | |
| Agent | Profile, behavior, your tools and their endpoints, waiting tool calls, suggested tools | Change profile and behavior, test or run a tool, switch a tool on or off, disconnect or sync an endpoint, approve or deny the agent’s waiting calls, mark a suggested tool built or dismiss it |
| Integrations | Email, Slack, Discord, GitHub, docs sites, Notion and Linear settings | Turn email on or off, set the Slack channel, set up Discord channels and the staff role, choose where signal issues go, watch a repository’s commits, connect or disconnect a repository for knowledge, set a published docs address |
| Team | The organization, members, invitations, webhooks | Rename the organization, change a role, remove someone, invite someone, revoke an invitation, add, change or remove a webhook |
| Keys | Median keys | Revoke a key |
| Web | Search results, and a web page once you approve reading it | |
| Docs | This site |
It can also ask you to fill in a form, and link you to the page it is talking about.
These stay in the dashboard:
- Installing the Slack app or the Discord bot, and connecting Notion or GitHub accounts
- Creating Median keys
- Buying a plan, credits or add-ons
- Site settings
- Leaving or deleting the organization
Every call that reads or changes your organization’s data counts against your organization’s API rate limits. Web searches, page reads and docs searches do not.
Approvals
These calls wait for your approval.
| Area | Waits for approval |
|---|---|
| Inbox | Sending a reply, adding a note, deleting a conversation |
| Customers | Reaching out, forgetting a fact, deleting a customer |
| Knowledge | Deleting a document or folder, approving a suggestion, importing a website |
| Signals | Filing a signal, marking one done, merging, deleting, opening an issue, closing one from a commit |
| Agent | Changing profile or behavior, testing or running a tool, switching a tool on or off, disconnecting an endpoint, deciding the agent’s waiting calls, marking a suggested tool built or dismissing it |
| Integrations | Every change |
| Team | Renaming the organization, changing a role, removing someone, inviting someone, adding, changing or removing a webhook |
| Keys | Revoking a key |
| Web | Reading a page |
Everything else runs at once. That covers every read, writing and editing documents, moving things, and changing a conversation’s status.
A waiting call shows as a card marked Needs your approval, with the exact details it would run with.
| Button | Result |
|---|---|
| Approve and run | The call runs. The card shows what happened |
| Deny | Nothing runs. The card reads Denied, and the assistant answers you |
- Decide on the chat page, in the command palette with
YandN, or with the buttons in Slack and Discord. - Only the person who owns the chat can decide.
- When one answer parks several calls, the assistant carries on after the last is decided.
- A call that fails shows its error, or Action did not run.
The agent’s own tool calls on customer conversations are a different queue. See Approvals and tool runs.
Forms
When a job needs a value it cannot find, the assistant puts a form in the chat.
- Up to 6 fields. Each is one line of text, a paragraph, a choice, or yes or no.
- Send answers. It works once every required field is filled.
- Skip leaves the form unanswered, and the assistant carries on without it.
While a form or an approval waits, the message box reads Answer the question above to continue and cannot send.
Chats
| Rule | Detail |
|---|---|

| Title | The first line of your first message, up to 60 characters |
| Rename | Up to 80 characters |
| History | The clock button on a chat page, or View chat history on the home page, opens Chats. It lists your 100 most recent chats |
| One answer at a time | Sending while an answer is arriving gives “Wait for the reply to finish.” |
| Stop | The stop button, a square in place of send, ends the answer and keeps what it wrote |
In Chats, each row’s menu has Rename and Delete. While renaming, Enter saves and Esc cancels. Delete asks you to confirm in Delete chat, then removes the chat and all its messages, with no undo.

In Slack and Discord
Slack messages, and mentions in a Discord server, need that workspace or server connected to your organization. Discord direct messages need only a linked account. See Slack and Discord.
| Slack | Discord | |
|---|---|---|
| Start a chat | Message the Median app directly. Each top-level message starts its own chat. Or mention the app in a channel, and it answers in a thread | Mention the bot in a text channel, and it opens a thread named after your message. Or send it a direct message |
| Carry on | Reply in the thread | Reply in the thread. In a direct message, keep typing. New chat under an answer starts over |
| Suggested prompts | A new direct message offers Today, Needs a person, Bugs and The agent | Not available |
| Stop an answer | Not available | Stop under the answer |
| Approvals | A Waiting on you card with Run it and No, plus Open in Median when the call has a page | Same |
| Forms | A One question card. Answer opens the form | Same. A form with more than 5 fields sends you to the app |
- Each thread is an ordinary chat. It shows in Chats with the platform’s mark, and you can carry it on in the app.
- The chat page header shows the Slack or Discord mark. For a thread in a Discord server, the mark links back to the thread.
- Messages are text only. Files posted in Slack or Discord do not reach the assistant.
- On Discord, the bot stays out of ticket channels.
| Reply | Cause |
|---|---|
| This conversation belongs to another Median account. | Someone other than the chat’s owner wrote in the thread |
| Only the person who started this request can answer it. | Someone else pressed a button on a card |
| Still working on the last one. Give it a moment. | An answer is still arriving |
| Respond to the request above to continue. | A card is waiting for a decision |
| This server is not connected to Median. Connect it at … and I can answer here. | The Discord server is not connected to any organization. Slack says “workspace” |
| This server belongs to a different Median organization than your account does. | Your account is linked to another organization |
| I could not open a thread here. Can I make threads in this channel? | The bot lacks permission to create threads |
| Say what you need and I will get on with it. | You mentioned the Discord bot with no message |
| Mention me in a normal text channel and I will open a thread. | You mentioned the Discord bot outside a text channel, such as in a forum or voice channel |
Link your account
The assistant answers only a linked chat account. A Slack account whose email matches a member of the organization that installed the app links itself on the first message. Any other account gets Link my account. Linking, unlinking and the link rules are in Link your account.
In Logs
Admins and owners see the assistant’s work in Logs. Filter Done by to Assistant.
| Entry | Records |
|---|---|
| Assistant reply | One per answer, with the tools it used, tokens and credits |
| Changes it made | The same entries a change from the page makes, with Assistant as the actor |
| Tool call approved, Tool call declined | Your decision on one of its waiting calls. Logged with you as the actor, so it shows under Done by → Team, not Assistant |
Log entries never include what was said in a chat.
